What is Neutrino Day?
Neutrino Day was declared by Gov. Mike Rounds for the entire state of South Dakota. The day is now celebrated in Lead with a weekend of science and art events.
Where is Neutrino Day?
The 2011 Neutrino Day festivities are taking place in Lead, South Dakota at the Homestake Mine. Saturday, July 9, shuttles will run from the Homestake Gold Mine Visitor's Center, 160 Main St., to the lab starting at 8:30 a.m. and running every 15 minutes.

Science Café
Thursday, July 7: Tom Durkin, deputy director of the South Dakota Space Grant Consortium at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, will talk about the end of the space shuttle and what the future holds for space exploration. The shuttle's last launch is planned for July 8. The Lead Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a wine-and-hors d'oeuvres social hour from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM. There will be a $15 cover, and the event will be webcast at http://sdpb.org/sciencecafe at 6:30 PM MDT.
High-def talks with scientists nearly a mile underground
Talk one-on-one with scientists and technicians working 4,850 feet underground, using the Sanford
Laboratory’s high-definition videoconference system.
Mini-lectures
Half-hour talks begin on the hour, starting at 9 a.m.
- 9 a.m. Photography underground, where photons are scarce (Steve Babbitt/BHSU)
- 10 a.m. Building mega-caverns bigger than Mount Rushmore (Dr. Bill Roggenthen, SDSMT)
- 11 a.m. Signals from supernovas seen deep in the earth (Dr. Peggy Norris, Sanford Lab)
- Noon The worldwide race for dark matter (Dr. Dan Akerib, Case Western Reserve University)
Hoist-room tours
Get up close and personal with the giant hoists that transport people and equipment up and down a 5,000-foot shaft.
Hands-on activities
Stations available for children to learn about cosmic rays, stardust, nanotechnology, and more.
